James F. O'Connell earned his Ph.D. in 1971 from UC Berkeley. His research has included both archaeology and ethnography of hunter-gatherers, with fieldwork in North America, East Africa, and Australia. He is currently a Professor of Anthropology at the University of Utah, and Director of the Archaeological Center. His most recent project examines the costs and benefits of tuber exploitation in the Great Basin.
